Description
The technical details necessary to weave the toquilla straw were part of the spatial development, taking advantage of the inclination of the roofs and generating a useful second floor. The spaces are open, generating a utilitarian corridor that enhances cross ventilation throughout the house. A system of straw screens that are very resistant to climate and humidity are responsible for closing the house at night. Glass was not required, but rather mosquito netting that attenuates the passage of wind at night, keeping it cool. An air recirculation system is applied by means of a wooden grid on the floor that allows the passage of cold air through the shade of the house itself.
The second prototype of the Casa Toquilla L, with 80m2 and a direct construction cost of $20,000, is the one-story version of the Casa Toquilla, designed for families made up of elderly users or those with reduced mobility. The house accommodates up to 8 people. Unlike the Casa Toquilla M, this one is divided into three spaces for privacy reasons, depending on the family's needs. Two bedrooms and a common area that also houses rest areas. Thermal strategies such as the floor grid to recirculate cold air and the screens with mosquito nets are replicated as in the previous prototype.
The third prototype of the Casa Toquilla S, with 60m2, with a direct construction cost of $13,000, is the smallest of the trilogy of housing studies. Ideal for 6 people, its distribution is similar to the Casa Toquilla M, the exterior spaces on the second floor are eliminated, but the upper partition is completely opened to optimize space and have the same features as the balcony.
